How to Wash Golf Polos and Keep Them Sharp

A great golf polo should still look switched on by the back nine, not faded, saggy or carrying last Saturday’s sweat. Performance fabric is built to move, breathe and dry quickly, but it needs a little more care than the old cotton shirt at the bottom of the drawer. Get the wash wrong and even the boldest print can lose its edge.

Knowing how to wash golf polos properly keeps the fit clean, the collar crisp and the colour exactly where it belongs: making an impact on the fairway.

Start with the care label, not guesswork

Every polo is different. Some are predominantly polyester with a touch of elastane for stretch, while others blend technical fibres with cotton for a softer hand feel. That blend affects how the garment responds to heat, detergent and drying.

Check the care label before its first wash, especially if the polo has contrast panels, a printed design, heat-applied detailing or a structured collar. The label is the final word if its instructions differ from general advice. A 30°C wash is usually the smart setting for modern performance golf polos, but the fabric itself gets the deciding vote.

It may feel tempting to throw a polo in with towels, gym kit and everything else after a wet round. Resist it. Golf polos stay sharper for longer when they are treated as performance wear, not laundry filler.

How to wash golf polos without fading the colour

Turn your polo inside out before it goes into the machine. This simple move reduces friction across the outer surface, helping printed patterns, dark colours and bright details keep their finish. Close any zips on nearby garments and avoid washing polos alongside rough items such as jeans, heavy hoodies or towels.

Wash similar colours together. Dark polos should stay with darks, whites with lights, and vibrant pieces with similar shades where possible. A new red, navy or deep green polo may release a small amount of dye on its first wash, so give it a little space rather than risking a surprise colourway for your white kit.

Use a cool wash at 30°C and choose a gentle or synthetic cycle. Hot water can weaken elastic fibres over time, particularly in polos designed with stretch. It can also make stains settle rather than lift if they have already dried into the fabric.

A quality liquid detergent is usually a better choice than powder for technical garments. Powders can occasionally leave residue in lightweight fabric, while too much detergent creates a build-up that affects breathability. Use the recommended amount for the load and your water hardness. More detergent does not mean cleaner kit.

Skip fabric conditioner on performance polos

Fabric conditioner sounds like the obvious route to a softer shirt. For technical golf clothing, it is often the wrong one.

Conditioner can leave a coating on performance fibres. That coating may reduce the fabric’s ability to wick moisture and release odour, which defeats the point of a polo built for warm tee boxes, long walks and pressure putts. The same goes for heavily fragranced laundry products that mask smells without properly washing them away.

If you want the polo to feel fresh, use the right amount of detergent, wash it promptly after wearing and let it dry fully before folding. Clean performance fabric should feel light and comfortable, not artificially coated.

Deal with sunscreen, sweat and course stains first

Not every mark needs a dramatic stain-removal mission. In fact, aggressive treatment can do more damage than the stain itself. The trick is to act early and match the treatment to the problem.

For sunscreen around the collar or shoulders, work a small amount of liquid detergent gently into the area before washing. Leave it for around 10 minutes, then wash as normal. Avoid scrubbing hard with a brush, particularly on a printed or textured polo.

For mud or grass, let the dirt dry first and brush off the loose material. Rubbing wet mud spreads it deeper into the weave. Then apply a little detergent to any remaining mark and put the polo through a cool wash.

Sweat and deodorant marks are best handled quickly. Don’t leave a damp polo compressed in a golf bag or car boot until midweek. Turn it inside out, allow it to air briefly if you cannot wash it straight away, then wash it after your round. This makes odour far less likely to settle into the fabric.

For stubborn stains, check that a stain remover is suitable for synthetic and coloured fabrics, then test it discreetly first. Chlorine bleach is a hard no for most golf polos. It can strip colour, damage fibres and leave your sharpest kit looking tired.

Keep the collar looking clean, not crushed

A polo collar frames the whole look. When it curls, flattens or loses shape, even a great-fitting shirt can look off.

Do not wring your polo after washing. Twisting the fabric puts unnecessary strain on the collar, placket and stretch fibres. Instead, lift it from the machine, give it one gentle shake and reshape the collar with your hands while the garment is damp.

If you are air-drying, hang the polo on a broad hanger or lay it flat on a drying rack. A narrow wire hanger can pull the shoulders out of shape, while pegging a wet polo from the collar can leave it stretched. Smooth the placket and collar into place before it dries, and you will need far less intervention later.

Most performance polos do not need ironing. If yours does, turn it inside out and use a low heat setting. Avoid pressing directly over logos, prints or heat-applied details. A light steam from a distance can help relax small creases, but high heat is never the power move here.

Air-drying wins, but timing matters

The tumble dryer is convenient. It is also one of the fastest ways to shorten the life of a stretch performance polo. High heat can shrink blended fabrics, weaken elastane and cause collars to lose their clean structure.

Air-dry whenever possible, ideally indoors or in a shaded, ventilated spot. Strong direct sunlight may fade darker colours and bright prints over repeated exposure. If you need to use a tumble dryer, follow the care label and choose the lowest heat setting for the shortest practical time. Remove the polo while it is still just slightly damp, reshape it and let the final moisture evaporate naturally.

Never put a polo away damp. It is the shortcut to trapped odour, creasing and that stale smell no amount of aftershave can hide.

Common washing mistakes that cost your polos their edge

The biggest mistake is waiting too long to wash a sweaty polo. Perspiration, sunscreen and body oils build up gradually, making the fabric harder to refresh later. Wash after each wear in hot conditions, after a particularly active round or whenever the polo has picked up visible dirt. If you wore it briefly in cool weather and stayed dry, airing it out before deciding is reasonable.

Another common error is overloading the machine. When the drum is packed tight, water and detergent cannot move through the clothes properly. Your polo comes out creased, less clean and more likely to rub against rougher garments. Give technical pieces room to move.

Finally, do not judge a polo only by whether it survives one wash. Great golf kit earns its place through repeat wear. The aim is to protect colour, stretch, shape and moisture management across a full season, not just get it clean for tomorrow morning.

A sharper routine for statement golfwear

The best routine is straightforward: turn the polo inside out, wash it cool with similar colours, use a modest amount of liquid detergent, skip conditioner and air-dry it in shape. It takes no extra skill, just a little more intention.

That attention matters when your wardrobe is built to stand out. A bold Caddie Couture polo is designed to bring personality to the course, and proper care keeps the colour, fit and confidence coming back round after round. Treat your golf polos like the performance pieces they are, and they will keep looking ready for the first tee.
